A beef kneecap (patella) is the small, hard bone that sits in the front of the knee joint. When sold for dogs, it's often attached to some cartilage, tendon, or pieces of the surrounding knee joint rather than being just the patella itself.
You'll typically notice:
- A rounded or triangular bone shape.
- Lots of cartilage and connective tissue attached.
- Less marrow than a femur marrow bone.
- A chewy texture from the tendons and cartilage that many dogs enjoy.
Many raw feeders prize knee-joint pieces because the cartilage and connective tissue can provide a satisfying chew without being quite as dense as a straight femur shaft. However, they should still be given under supervision.
