Jiminy's Treats
OUR REASON FOR BEING
In the US, our dogs consume more than 32 billion pounds of protein each year. In fact, according to a UCLA Study, cats and dogs are responsible for 25 to 30% of the environmental impact of meat consumption in the US.
Our dogs are athletes and they need high quality protein to stay healthy. BUT 32 billion pounds of protein is an enormous amount – and the traditional source for this protein (cow / chicken) is just not sustainable. Our solution at Jiminy’s replaces traditional animal protein with insect protein.
Simply put, it’s delicious, nutritious, sustainable, humane and hypoallergenic!
MAKING A DIFFERENCE WITH SUSTAINABLE DOG FOOD & TREATS
Insect protein is truly a sustainable protein source. Better land use and feed conversion. In addition, less water and almost no greenhouse gases.
DOG FOOD THAT SAVES LAND
Both crickets & grubs are farmed in barns, and require exponentially less land to produce an equivalent amount of protein.
DOG TREATS THAT SAVE WATER
If you compare one 5 oz bag of Jiminy’s with the same size bag of traditional treats, we save 220 gallons of water! WITH JUST ONE BAG.
Now, if you take a dog who is eating a chicken-based diet and switch to an insect based diet, we save 480,000 gallons of water per year. And we’re not talking about a Godzilla sized dog (just your average 40 pounder).
LESS GREENHOUSE GAS
Jiminy’s partnered with Carbon Credit Capital to measure the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with our products. While we generally knew that our products are environmentally superior to traditional protein alternatives, we wanted to quantify just how much better we really are. To do that, we partnered with Carbon Credit Capital in New York to measure the greenhouse gas emissions associated with our products’ ingredients and ingredient procurement. This is also known as a “cradle-to-manufacture” life cycle assessment.
“We are pleased to report that Jiminy’s initial hypotheses were confirmed,” commented Reed Shapiro, Director at Carbon Credit Capital, “Not only does Jiminy’s provide more nutrition per gram of treat, and consume substantially less water, but they also emit an average of 7.4 times less greenhouse gas than beef protein treats, and 2.3 times less greenhouse gas than chicken protein treats.”
MEASURING OUR IMPACT
In 2015, the United Nations (UN) outlined 17 Sustainability Development Goals. These goals are a call to action to all organizations to increase welfare for all while protecting the planet. The Sustainable Development Goals are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we all face.
At Jiminy’s, we are using these 17 SDG’s as a guide to achieving our sustainable goals within our organization. This year we’ve decided to focus on and measure three of them: 6, 12, & 13. We’re working towards others and will add measurement on those over time.
What’s super exciting is that in the last 12 months we’ve really made an impact!
- OVER 218 MILLION GALLONS OF WATER SAVED
- 20.5 MILLION GRAMS OF GREENHOUSE GASES AVERTED
- 130,000 POUNDS OF INSECT PROTEIN PER ACRE OF LAND
We’re proud of this progress and will continue to share our journey!
